THE DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER OF IRELAND JOINS I-SMILE INT’L TO MARK THE UN DAY FOR THE ERADICATION OF POVERTY

i-Smile International, a non-profit organisation with headquarters in Dublin marked the UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on the 17th of October 2015 in Dublin, Ireland. This global event is designated to promote awareness on the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries and according to the Founder/CEO of i-Smile, Adaku Ezeudo "since i-Smiles overarching goal is to address all forms of social exclusion experienced by women and girls, it was pertinent to be part of this global call to action". She also spoke passionately about the multifaceted nature of poverty particularly as it affects 70% of women and girls worldwide. She further stressed on the importance of education as pathway out of poverty and encouraged attendees to challenge themselves to contribute to making poverty history in their own little way.

The Special Guest of the evening, Deputy Prime Minister of Ireland and Minister of Social Protection, Joan Burton TD graced the occasion and talked about the importance of education especially for women as a means of self-empowerment and a platform to increase their options in life. She also urged everyone to go out there and put a smile on the faces of others who need to smile. Another featured speaker, Rebecca OHalloran, the Education and Advocacy Officer in Plan Ireland, an International NGO working to make a difference in the lives of children living in poverty, focused on the need for everyone to work together to eradicate poverty. She also emphasized on the importance of including the voices of young people in discussions that affect their rights and welfare so that they empowered to create their own positive future.

A very poignant drama on the issue of poverty, homelessness and direct provision was staged by the i-Smile drama group. It pointed out the real everyday challenges and struggles many experience globally. The day, although based on a very serious issue had some light moments including cultural dances, fashion show as well as lovely ethnic dishes to end the evenings procedures.
