PRIMMY'S CORNER - WHAT HAVE I DONE?

What have I done I ask myself every day did I unknowingly turn my daughter against our country Nigeria?
It all started early this year when I was making my daughters hair in the living room and I asked her to change the channel to an African channel you could see the shock on her face, because I don’t allow my kids to watch Nollywood movies (Home videos) but she did anyway and Mercy Johnson came on I really can’t remember the name of the movie now all I and my daughter remember was that she was being maltreated terrible in the movie and for like 30mins she was going through one form of humiliation and maltreatment  or the other. My daughter couldn't understand it all when she couldn't take it anymore she turned to me with confusion written all over her face and went mommy why are they beating and treating her this way I responded by saying because she is a maid and she was like what is a maid I explained what a maid in Nigeria is and like every Nigerian mum told her if you don’t pay attention to you studies that is what you will end up like and she promised me that she was going to pay attention to her studies and ended with I hate Nigeria they are so mean and  in my head I was like whatever I have made an impact in your life today education is key to a successful life shikina LOl. Then the almighty Aluu 4 incident happened and I used the photo of the Aluu 4 of blessed memories as my phone wall paper when my daughter saw it the following conversation ensued
Yoma: Mummy are they your nephews
Me: No they are the Aluu 4
Yoma: Are they actors?
Me: No they were killed recently by a community in Nigeria called Aluu
Yoma: Oh my God that is terrible what did they do?
Me:  They did nothing
Yoma: That is why I said I hate Nigeria they are so mean

I still didn’t see anything wrong with her response until few days ago.We went to the hospital to see a consultant being her first time in the hospital the receptionist said we had to register her as a new patient since it’s her first time in the hospital ko si wahala she directed us on where to go, as they were filling out the forms online the lady asked me her nationality I said Nigerian my daughter looked at me and said with all seriousness I am not Nigerian I am Irish, I was stunned and I tried explaining to her that we are Nigerians and Ireland is her birth country she vehemently refused, she turned to the lady in a very calm way that says I am trying to be respectful here I am IRISH the lady turnd to me and asked if she was entitled to dual citizenship  I said yes she now turned to my daughter and said you are so Irish I just put that down and my daughter turned to me with a smile that says I told you so, that was when it dawned on me that my innocent response to her question has affected her negatively.
I know she is still growing, she is just 8 years old how do I reverse this, is there any programme out there that can help? I am one of these parents who explain things to their kids (Not everything though, only things I feel are harmless for their age) but this has shown me that most kids are impressionable. I am not happy she doesn’t like Nigerian; I tried to find out if she still dislikes Naija today  and she gave be a resounding YES
What do I do now?  Any ideas people

  4. take her on holidays to nigeria...my sons keep telling their teachers that nigeria is better than ireland and their grandpa's house is bigger than the school...and stop telling her bad stories and KEEP her away from nollywood...you're not just meant to protect your kids from harm but from harmful stories such as those you tell her about your homeland. CHIKENA...a word should be enough for the wise!

    1. God bless you my brother/sister only few ppl like u r bold enough to be truthful.only yesterday i was telling my friend the POD's Desk is only full of gory stories.when u go to simply glamorous or tricexclusive, its positive its fun and i actually look forward to their next posts but here its about chopping off someone's head, death or accident or something diabolic.if the stories POD feeds us are what she feeds her kids, then not only would she/they hate nigeria but have nightmares.

  5. Simple Primi, DON'T let your kids watch 'Home-Videos'-Nigerian movies; there will be a seious culture-conflict playing in their minds- 8yrs old primi! 8yrs!! You will have to explain to her that what she saw was 'play-acting' & nothing more. The earlier you realise that she is more Irish than Nigerian, the better. IMHO
